Geographical position
Construction of Slavutych town was carried out in accordance with Decree of Communist Party of the Soviet Union Central Committee and the USSR Council of Ministers from 02.10.86 ¹ 1179 "About Construction of the Town for Inhabitancy of Chornobyl NPP People and Members of Their Families".
This town has become the symbol of brotherly friendship of the peoples of the former USSR. It was built by the forces of 8 former Soviet Social Republics – Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
Slavutych is situated on the left bank of the Dnieper River 50 km from Chernigov, 200 km from Kyiv, 12 km from the boarder with Belarus and 100 km from the boarder of Russia and just at the railway station called Nerafa before. Administratively the Town belongs to Kyiv Region, geographically it is located on the territory of Ripkinsk District of Chernigiv Region. The well-developed network of highways favourably connects Slavutych with Kyiv, Chernigiv, with regional centres and big villages located within 20-30 km radius, with recreation zone on the banks of the Dnieper River and forest plantations in the zone above the Dnieper.
Slavutych has a railway link to Chernigiv and further to Kyiv. Railway track goes through Slavutych to the station Iolcha in Belarus. Slavutych is connected with Chornobyl NPP by highway and railway Chernigiv – Chornobyl which partly come through Belarus territory.
Slavutych is favorably located in the centre between the capitals of two countries, Ukraine and Belarus. Slavutych is in two-hour way from Kyiv and the international airport "Boryspil", providing every-day air trips to the countries of CIS, Europe and the rest of the world. Moreover, Slavutych has a railway link to Belarus and Chernigiv; the latter is connected by railway with all major cities of Ukraine, Belarus, Russia (Moscow and St. Petersburg). The highway Odessa – St. Petersburg that runs through Kyiv, Gomel and other cities of Belarus and Russia is located forty kilometres westwards from Slavutych.
Climate
Climate of the region where Slavutych is located is temperate continental and characterized by predominance of wind masses from the Atlantic. Presence of the Atlantic wind masses in winter promotes rise of average temperature of the air and in summer this process promotes cloudy cool weather. Continental wind intrusion in winter leads to sharp and considerable falls of temperature and in summer is accompanied with hot dry weather.
Region is located in the zone of sufficient moistening. Annual atmospheric precipitates come to 639 mm. The Region is characterized by continental type of annual precipitates with maximum in summer. Average amount of days with snow cover is 102. In some winters this figure may vary from 23 to 160 days. Maximum height of snow cover is up to 30 cm.
During the year south-west and west winds predominate in the Region with variable annual wind speed 4.3 m/sec and the lowest wind speed in August 2.7 m/sec.
