Chernobyl Centre of Nuclear Safety Problems, Radioactive Waste and Radio-Ecology

chernobyl centre of nuclear safety problems, radioactive waste and radio-ecologyChernobyl Centre of Nuclear Safety Problems, Radioactive Waste and Radio-Ecology was created on 26 April, 1996 by the Decree of the President of Ukraine as a scientific-technical organisation, within the jurisdiction to Ukrainian Ministry, whose main objective

is support, development and increase of efficiency of the international scientific-technical activity in the field of nuclear and radiation safety and radio-ecology.

Main directions of scientific-technical and engineering activity, which are being developed on the basis of ICC, are:

• nuclear and radiation safety

• physical protection

• decommissioning of nuclear facilities

• training in case of emergency response

• radio-ecology researches.

The structure of Chernobyl centre includes Laboratory of Engineering Developments and Technologies (LEDT), International Radio-Ecological Laboratory (IRL), Kyiv department/ Laboratory of Safety Analysis and Centre of Projects Monitoring (Kyiv).

More than 100 people work for Chernobyl centre at the moment, 71% of whom have high education, 10% have scientific degree, 30% is youth of the age under 30.

Main projects, which realized by ICC in Slavutych, are the following:

• Creation of integrated database of the "Shelter" Object

• Modernization of safety system of oncology clinics in Ukraine

• Development of radiation protection programme on the stage of final closure of ChNPP

• Development of database on radioactive waste at Chernobyl NPP

• Project of in-depth analysis of safety of power-generating unit ¹1 of Rovno NPP and of power-generating unit ¹1 of Khmelnitskiy NPP

• Creation of database about consequences of Chernobyl accident

• Radio-ecologic researches in contaminated zone

• State evaluation of the threat of nuclear facilities, nuclear materials, radioactive waste and other sources of ionising radiation

• Work in the framework of Kioto protocol of UNO Convention on changing of the climate

• International forums

Every year scientific-practical conference "International Cooperation to Chernobyl" and International scientific seminar "Radio-ecology of Chernobyl Zone" are conducted in Slavutych.

International radioecology laboratory (IRL) was established on 22 July, 1998 and its activities include:

• Research of the influence of radioactive contamination of Chernobyl zone on biologic objects and ecologic systems.

• Ecological examination of the projects, technologies of production and products, ecological audit.

• Development of the new technologies of effective overcoming of nuclear and radiation accident consequences and ecological rehabilitation of the environment.

• Development of the reports on ecological safety analysis of the enterprises, productions and technological facilities.

• Organisation and conducting of training courses and seminars on radioecology.
