FOREST RESOURCES

Forest fund belongs to the State. Forestland, which surrounds the town, is divided into pieces of woodland serviced by "Forestries"

Slavutych is territorially situated in Ripki District of Chernigiv Region where 78,000 hectares are occupied with forest. 90% of forests are pine trees.

The region forests are rich in berry-fields (wild strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and other), many mushrooms. Hares, wolves, wild goats, wild boars, and elks represent wild animals. There are also great many of different birds, both big and small, wintering and migrant. There are many small lakes in the forests, hunting grounds are provided.

Slavutych Forestry’s plan for felling for the period of 10 years from 1998 to 2008 is about 20,000 m3, annually about 2,000 m3. Plan of planting for the period of 10 years is 14 hectares. There are 6 timber enterprises of small and middle business with more than 100 employees.

SOURCE OF MINERALS AND RAW MATERIALS

Ukraine has enough peat reserves for industrial exploitation. Peat fields are mostly located in the regions of Ukrainian marshy woodlands (Sumy, Chernigiv, Kyiv, Volynsk, Rovno regions). Total peat reserves in Ukraine are 2.2 milliard tons. In Chernigiv Region there are 204 peat fields with the total area of 68.900 hectares, which is approximately 252.6 million tons of peat.

About 5% of Chernigiv marshy woodland is occupied by peat bogs.

Nowadays the most actively exploited peat deposit in Chernigiv Region is Smolensky. It is situated 20 kilometres from Slavutych. Developed area of this deposit is 400 hectares and total peat resources are more than 5 million tons. Within 100 km radius from Slavutych there are such big peat deposits as Ripky (Chernigiv Region) and deposit "Trubizh" (Kyiv Region) with amount of the peat more than 37 million tons.

At present peat exploitation is conducted with the purpose of its use as natural fertilizer and as fuel at thermoelectric power stations.

At present on the nearest to Slavutych peat deposit in Mnev exploitation has been closed down temporarily.

In the region there are also some deposits of brick – tile raw materials (aleurites and malm loams) – Aleshnya, Lovin, Ripki and others, glass and molding sand – Grbiv, Lovin. Chudiv and other deposits.

In 1986 while conducting of engineering – geological research Nedanchichi quartz sand deposit was discovered, its reserves are 4.9 million m3, with average thickness of ball is 16.3 m.

There are means of convenient transportation of raw materials (railway, highway) while exploitation.
